Healthcare is Evolving, and So Are We

It’s no surprise that technology has drastically transformed our world within the past few decades. It’s altered the way we communicate, the way we learn, and even the way we think. Phone calls have turned into text messages, letters have turned into emails, and computers have (essentially) turned into phones.

Technology has allowed countless industries to streamline their productivity and increase efficiency, and the healthcare industry is no exception to this.

Where is Healthcare Headed?

There’s no crystal ball to tell us exactly how healthcare will transform in the near future; however, based off what we know now, we can take a pretty good guess. The demands on our healthcare system are rising each day, and this means that the traditional practices in the industry might not cut it in the future.

Many of the tools needed to revolutionize the world of healthcare lie in the hands of technology. Those tools will be used not only to take on more demand, but also to further personalize patient care. A human with pen and paper can’t do everything. That’s why technologies will be utilized to store and organize the growing amount of patient information AND aid in more accurate diagnoses. Personalized, accurate, and fast—that’s the goal.

Another problem that our healthcare system faces is the strict 15-minute window that physicians have with a patient. It’s rushed. And, if a patient is late to his or her appointment, rescheduling is usually in order. This is why online visits may become an option in the future. Obviously this wouldn’t pertain to visits where physical touch and examination were needed, but in other cases, this could work quite well. With the help of a webcam, these meetings could be more convenient, flexible, and efficient (1).

How MedaCheck is Keeping Up with Patient Demand

In 2012, MedaCheck was birthed by a simple idea. Our CEO, Jeffrey Shepard, wanted to create a device that reminded him to take his medication at the correct time so that he wouldn’t miss it. And that was it.

As his idea evolved in its early stages, he realized that this device could play a key role in a bigger problem that the U.S. healthcare system faces: medication nonadherence. This problem was bigger than his own—it was much more complicated (and costly) than simply remembering to take his own medication. Proper medication adherence means that a patient is taking the right medication, at the right time, in the right manner, at the right dosage. It sounds simple, but it actually isn’t. Nearly 50% of Americans do NOT take their medication as prescribed, and that takes a whopping toll on our healthcare system—about $290 billion annually to be more specific (2). This is why MedaCheck sends off an alert when it’s time to take your medication, along with a photo of the drug, the name of the medication, and any specific instructions to take the medication properly—because it’s not just about taking your medication on time, it’s about doing it the right way. Dr. Shepard predicted how drastically this could increase living independence among patients with lots of medications to take (and he was right.) MedaCheck gave (and continues to give) caregivers peace of mind knowing that they don’t need to constantly check up on their loved one.

Within the last 5 years, MedaCheck has evolved from being a simple reminder device to a platform that offers much more than that. We now help health care systems manage their patients’ diseases and have shifted our focus to the patient, their health, and how they communicate all that data to their provider in a way that makes interpreting data easy for everyone, including the health care provider. By using real time analysis, we are able to gain a better understanding of patients’ health and provide real time treatment, giving doctors the ability to provide more comprehensive and focused care for their patients.

Our goals and deliverables have broadened as we now move towards managing behavior and treating the specific diseases by creating an ecosystem where caregivers can get more involved in their loved ones’ mission to better health.
